Seth Tankian’s first solo album “Elect the Dead” turns 10 years old today! Ten whole years and it’s still one of my favorite albums of all time. My dad showed me System of a Down when I was too young to even know what music was, so I was naturally devastated when I discovered they had broken up. Not much longer after that, Serj released “Elect the Dead,” for which he wrote, recorded, and produced entirely himself. This album is literally proof of Serj’s impeccable musicianship that goes far beyond his capabilities in System of a Down and I’ll be listening to it for another ten years and beyond.

Citizen returns with the highly anticipated follow up to their controversial 2015 release “Everybody Is Going To Heaven.” EIGTH was, in a way, a departure from the predictable sound that they had on their previous releases and an exploration into a darker unknown. “As You Please” is a resurfacing of the alternative rock sound they discovered on “Youth” but with added elements from EIGTH to form their best album yet. While personally I always favored EIGTH over “Youth,” on first listen, “As You Please” gave me the same vibes I got when first listening to “Youth” back in the day, and it’s so refreshing to hear this newly polished alternative rock sound again.

Along with “Creatures of the Night” and “Killers,” “Lick It Up” was one of the staple records that shifted Kiss’s sound from larger-than-life rock and roll to the direction of 1980’s glam metal. Kiss has always stated that they will never play their deeper cuts live again and only stick to their hits, which I can understand. But I noticed that they still play “Lick It Up” at every show. That makes it the only 80’s Kiss song that somehow held enough relevance to make it onto the set list of every Kiss concert for the rest of their careers. It’s kind of unfortunate though, because they have so many better 80’s songs that I would have loved to hear live instead.

Upon the release of this album, now former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley stated “Paul and Gene wanted to experiment with a concept album, which I never understood cuz I just wanted to make another rock and roll record.” A part of me thinks the band should have listened to Ace this time. Definitely not one of their best records, but The Elder is packed full of deep cuts that contain some pretty groovy riffs and licks to satisfy the soul of any rock and roller.
